What Style Of Art Sells Best?
Many artists become impatient when they are first starting to sell their artwork.
It is very exciting when you finish a project and you publish it on the web for the world to see.
I can still remember how anxious I would get. I would upload an image and check my email every five minutes to see if I landed a sale.
But after selling online for over fifteen years I have learned how to be patient.
It takes time to have a listing seen by the right person and have them click the “buy it now” button.
It is not a question of what style of art sells best, it is about having your art seen by the right person.
Your target audience is out there and they want to have what you created hanging on their wall.
You just have to take the time to find them and make them aware that you create and sell artwork.
Stop wasting time searching for what was the best selling art in 2019 or what was the best selling art in 2018.
Identify what your unique strengths are and start branding your art business so you can market to people who have a passion for what you create.
What Is Your Passion
Passion is defined as a strong emotion that is barely controllable.
Why did you start creating art?
There was something or someone who inspired you to become an artist.
Once you started creating art your passion evolved to who you are today.
Your artwork is how you communicate with the world.
Now you are at the point in your life where you want to know how to make money as an artist.
You have spent many years learning how to be an artist, now you want to earn an income from your artistic skills.
There are many artists who put their passion aside because their only concern is landing a sale. These people lose sight of who they actually are and what message they are trying to share through their artwork.
If a sale does not come quickly enough, they start to question their talent and the subject they are creating.
This is one reason I see so many artists give up too early.
Would you like to know what style of art sells best?
It is yours.
I know that it is hard to stay patient when sales are not rolling in, but you have too.
Keep in mind, not everyone is in a position to make a purchase when they are on the web.
Think of how many times you go online versus how many times you make a purchase online.
The same is true with everyone else surfing the web.
Your mission is to upload the best images of your artwork, build brand awareness, create and publish pillar blog content and connect a story to your artwork. When you are able to connect your viewers to your artwork you will start to see sales come in more consistently.
It is not about changing the style of art you create or changing the medium you use, it is about having a passion for what you do and sharing your passion with the world.
What Art Sells Best
I hear the phrase, “I need to know what art sells best” by so many artists I coach.
Instead of focusing on enhancing their artistic skills and learning how to market their artwork, they waste time trying to find what art sells best.
- They will notice a type of art that sells, and then they will try to create something that is similar.
- They become frustrated when it doesn’t sell.
- They search for something else that is selling hoping to find a hidden treasure.
The cycle continues until they realize it is not the subject that matters it is all about how they are marketing their artwork.
If they stay true to themselves and learn how to be an expert at marketing online they will be rewarded with multiple sales.
Customers For All Artists
Is there art that is better than others?
I truly believe that all art is equal. In my opinion, art is only as good as the eyes seeing it. Everyone will have a different opinion about a piece of art they are looking at.
Some people might like the colors of a painting.
Some people might like realism art.
Others might be attracted to a looser look.
Some people like oil paintings while other people like graphite drawings.
Whose opinion is correct?
I believe everyone is correct. Everyone has a specific taste that moves them or sparks a memory.
It is just like music. Some people listen to blues while others like country.
Art is a form of communication.
Instead of trying to communicate like someone else.
Be yourself and share what you have to say to the world with your unique artwork.
Identify Your Weaknesses
Take time to identify what your weaknesses are instead of wasting time trying to figure out what style of art sells best.
If you are having a difficult time finding extra room in your nome and art studio for new art because you are not selling your art, more than likely you have a marketing problem.
- Do you know who your target audience is?
- Do you know the gender of your target audience?
- Do you know the average age of your target audience?
- Do you know the average income of your target audience?
- Do you know what your target audience likes?
- Do you know where your target audience hangs out online?
Once you have a clear idea of who the people are who want to have your paintings of drawings hanging on their walls, you will be able to market your art to them.
What does marketing mean?
Marketing is how businesses promote and sell products.
Instead of searching what style of art sells best, spend time learning more about your target audience so you can share your creativity with them.
Once your target audience sees your artwork, you will start to land sales.
Here are some articles that will help you to discover who your target audience is:

Now let’s say that you know who your target audience is, and you are getting your art out there for them to see, and your artwork is still not selling.
Here are some more reasons you might not be landing a sale:
- Prices – If your target audience does not earn enough income to be able to purchase your artwork, your prices are too high and you will want to revisit your pricing strategy.
- Sizes – If your target audience’s homes have large rooms and your paintings are too small for them to display on their walls, you will want to consider creating larger pieces.
- Color schemes – If your color schemes do not fit with your target audience’s decor, you might want to change your color palette.
These areas will take some time to assess and fine-tune but once you have them in harmony you will discover that your artwork will start to sell for you.
