What is SEO? Have you heard the term SEO but you are not quite sure what it means? In this post, I am going to talk about basic SEO and what it means for your art blog and online art gallery.
What is SEO
Selling art online is fun and rewarding, but there is a lot of work that is involved in order for you to be successful.
Today I would like to talk about SEO.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.
It is a strategy used by site owners to get their sites ranking higher in search engines. The end result is more free organic traffic to the site.
Search engine optimization is simply creating a website that is easy for search engines to understand what type of content the site has to offer.
There is a lot that goes into SEO but all you will need to be concerned about is the basics. If you focus on the basics you will do very well in search. Keep in mind that you do not have to be an expert in SEO to rank high in the search results. You only need to know more than your competition.
Here is a list of things you will need to focus on if you want your artist blog and art gallery to rank higher in search results.
- Quality Themes
- Visibility Settings
- Permalink Structure
- SEO Plugins
- Google Console
- Proper Use of Categories and Tags
- HTTPS URL
- High-Quality Content

By focusing on these areas you will be making it easy for Google to understand what your site has to offer. You are basically talking in Google’s language.
If Google and other search engines can understand what type of content you are producing and they feel that your content will be valuable for their readers, you will start to rank higher in the search engines. It is actually that simple. Keep in mind that it will take time for search engines to see you as an authority in your niche. You have to optimize your site and content for search engines as well as produce high-quality content your audience will enjoy on a regular basis.
After you have learned the basics of SEO you can start to work on other strategies that will help your artist blog rank higher like, site speed, optimizing images, backlinks, etc.
I am often asked by artists, “Why do I need to be concerned with SEO?”
The main reason is that most of your traffic will be generated by search results. If people are searching for information online they go to the search engines. They type in a phrase into the search bar and the most relevant content will be displayed.
Google and other search engines have developed an advanced algorithm that will determine the rank of a page or site.
Google’s Mission Statement:
“To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
For Google to achieve their mission, they must have an understanding of what the content is about and if it is useful for their readers. If they didn’t create this complex algorithm they would not be able to recommend the best content.
What would end up happening?
People would become very frustrated and not use Google as a search engine.
Think about, if you were looking for a recipe for chocolate cake and the posts that you clicked on where for dog biscuits would you continue to click on different posts until you found what you were looking for?
After the third or fourth attempt, I would become frustrated and just give up.
That is why it is so important for you to make your site “search engine friendly”. You want Google and other search engines to understand what your site is about so they can refer your art blog to the right people.
Those people are known as your target audience. The people who are interested in purchasing your artwork.
Taking the time to learn more about SEO will only strengthen your online art business.
