Time Management Strategies For The Working Artists
By the end of this post, you will know…
- What is time management
- Why is time management important
- How to manage time
- Time management tips
I have been self-employed for over 20 years, and I am always looking for different ways to grow my art business.
Trying different strategies means more time invested in the business.
Before I learned about time management, I was working over a hundred hours a week, and that lasted for about 5 years.
I worked over a hundred hours every week with no vacations.
Looking back at it now, I do not know how I did it. The only thing that kept me going was a goal to build a successful art business.
One day it hit me. I knew that if I wanted to reach the goals, I had to become more efficient with my time and enjoy other things in life, like my family. It was a challenge, but in time, I created better daily habits, which allowed me to achieve more in less time.
I was working smarter, not harder.
Now I am always searching for ways to accomplish more while leaving extra time for family.
In this post, I am going to share with you some things I have learned over the years that have helped me to continue to grow my art business while still having time to enjoy what matters in life, my family.
What Is Time Management
Before you can become more efficient with your time, you have to understand what time management is.
Good time management allows you to accomplish more in a shorter period of time, which leads to more free time, which lets you take advantage of learning opportunities, lowers your stress, and helps you focus, which leads to more career success. Each benefit of time management improves another aspect of your life. (Source: AppointmentPlus)
For example, when package and ship my art, I have time blocked off during the week to do just that.
In the past, when I sold artwork, I was so excited that I would stop what I was doing, package the art, and drive down to the post office.
You can easily see that this waisted a significant amount of time.
During that time, I could not see how much time I was waisting, but when I was learning about time management, I learned about blocking off time for specific projects.
Now I packaged sold artwork three times a week and schedule the post office to pick up the packages for me.
The time I save is put to other important projects that grow my art business.

I schedule out the upcoming week every Sunday. When Monday comes, I know exactly what I have to do.
