Artists communicate with visuals, and many artists have a difficult time hearing people critique their creations. Selling art would not even cross their mind, even though it is possible they could generate a significant income from their art sales.

In this post, you will discover that it is time for you to start breaking the fear, believe in your talents so that you can sell art online and at art fairs.

Breaking The Fear

It is human nature to want to be accepted.

Nobody likes to hear that they are not good enough.

It is understandable why artists are sensitive about their creations. The art they create is how they communicate with the world.

Below are some feelings you might encounter during the art journey that you will have to face head-on and overcome if you are interested in selling your artwork online.

Before we get started, it is essential to work on enhancing your art skill. If your dream is to operate a successful art business, you will have to practice art techniques and learn about art marketing and selling art.

Online video art courses from Sites like Udemy will help you to enhance your artistic skills quicker. CreativeLive offers online tutorials for building businesses for creative people.

Online courses are a great investment if you want to sell your creations but feel that your art is not good enough.

Not Good Enough

Many artists are afraid of selling art online because they think that their work is not good enough.

This fear holds them back from starting a life they have always dreamed of and prevents them from growing as artists.

As mentioned above, taking advantage of fine art tutorials from sites like Udemy.

Many artists dream of someday selling their art online but do not feel confident in their skills.

Dedicate some time enhancing your artistic skills if you do not feel confident that people would be delighted investing in your original art.

The artists who are successful in selling art are confident in their work.

To make a sale, you have to feel comfortable talking to your target audience about your creations. Potential art collectors feel comfortable investing a large amount of money in your work if you have difficulty talking about your art and your art career. The only way you will be able to talk about your art is to feel confident in your art skills.

Fear Of Success

Some fine art artists have a fear of success.

  • They do not feel comfortable with the attention that success would bring towards them.
  • They do not want the spotlight on them because they will feel vulnerable.
  • They might feel awkward or guilty because their family or friends do not have the same success.
  • They might feel that they do not deserve to be successful.

This type of mindset will prevent you from living the life that you dream of.

Being successful at what you do is not a bad thing. You have dedicated many hours to enhance your skills, and you should be rewarded for the time invested.

Fear Of Failure

Nobody likes to fail.

What is failing?

Does it mean that you have failed because you tried to do something and did not get the results you were hoping for? If that is true, we would never have learned how to walk, talk, or ride a bike.

When you were learning how to walk and fell on your hands and knees, you did not just give up because you thought you failed. Instead, you got right back up and tried again. You did this until you were able to walk to the other side of the room.

When you got your first bike and fell off, did you just put the bike away and never try again?

Everything that you can do today was learned.

Learning is not failing. The only way you can fail is by stopping too early.

It might take years before people start to recognize your art in the art world.

It might take years before you get a large following on social media.

If you are willing to put in the time, you will not fail.

Fear Of The Unknown

Most people fear the unknown. Why? Because they do not know what they will get when they get there.

Many emerging artists become stuck in a rut because they start to feel comfortable and secure where they are.

They might not like their job or other aspects of their lives, but they are unwilling to change because they fear the unknown.

The job that you have now was once an unknown. You didn’t know what to expect. You didn’t know how you would connect with the other employees.

There were many things you did not know when you started your job, but you did it. You learned how to do what is expected of you and how to engage with your fellow employees.

Now you feel comfortable, you might not like your job, but you know what to expect every day.

The same will happen when you start selling your art. You will learn what is necessary for you to succeed. In time you will become an expert in your field.

Final Thoughts On How To Start Selling Your Art

There is no better time than now to start selling your art.

The internet has made it possible for an artist to make a career from selling art online.

You no longer have to be represented in art galleries to build a large following.

Sites like BlueHost make it affordable and easy for artists to build an online art gallery to promote and sell their art.

Social media platforms allow you to advertise fine art and build relationships with potential art collectors for free.

Blogging is a free way to talk about your art and make it easier for people to discover your artist’s website on search engines like Google and Bing.

Once you break your fears of selling art, dedicate time to learn how to sell your art online. Learn how to market your art on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.

Success does not happen overnight, but with dedication and discipline, you can achieve great things.

I believe it isn’t just one’s fear of failing at selling their art, but also the fear of dealing with someone who has purchased their art. That is always my concern. Like, once they look at it closely (I sell online mostly) they don’t think it is a fabulous as they thought it was.

Having said that I know very talented artist who will do nothing to sell their art. That is hard for me to understand.

Paula, that is a great point that you make. I understand your feelings and also feel the same way. I have been selling art online for almost fifteen years and still have that feeling. I believe that it is because we have a deep connection with what we create. I hope that I will always have that feeling. If I do continue to feel that way I know that I have put everything that I have into what I create.

I also agree with your comment about other great artists. I am also a guitar instructor and have met hundreds of incredible musicians that have never gone further than playing with their friends. That often baffles me as well.
