Shipping Tips for Artists

Packaging and shipping is a task that no artist enjoys. When I owned my custom hand painted sign business in the early 2000’s, I tested many different options to decide what worked best for me. Every business is different so what works for one might not work for another. I am writing this post so you can save money on your shipping costs.

Shipping Services

The first step is to decide what shipping service you will want to use. I only offer one service. This saves me a lot of headaches, and I have never had a problem with the service.  If you are the only worker in your art business you want to set it up so, it will be the easiest for you.

Here is a list of the most popular shipping services based in the US.

All three services offer domestic and international shipping. This will allow you to decide if shipping your art internationally will be something that will benefit your art business.

If you are selling large items, there are Fine Art Shipping Services available. Take some time to research those companies by doing a Google search for, “fine art shipping services”.

Research the prices and reviews of the company. You want to make sure that you are using a reputable service that offers insurance.

Decide what company will work best for you

Shipping Supplies

You will need to decide what shipping supplies you will need to ship your artwork.

Here are some items you might need:

(The type of art you sell will determine what materials you will need.)

After you have what decided what materials you will need to ship your product, you will need to know how much the cost is for the supplies to ship one item. This price can be included in the shipping and handling fees, or with the shipping cost.

Some artists do very well by including the shipping cost into their art price and offer free shipping. Take some time to decide what strategy will work best for you.

Shipping Cost

After you have figured out what shipping service you will be using and how much the costs will be to ship the item it is time to set up a shipping cost. There are many ways to do this and it will take work depending on what you will offer. You will want to decide if you are going to charge depending on location or have a set fee. Price on location will take you some time to figure out. You will also have to update your costs when the shipping provider prices change.

Here are three options you will want to consider:

Shipping Cost for Location

This will provide a shipping cost from your shipping service to the buyer’s destination. There are tools provided by the shipping services to help you with the expenses. The buyer will have an accurate shipping cost.

Flat Shipping Cost

This will provide a flat shipping cost to all domestic locations. You will have to determine what price to charge for the shipping.

Free Shipping

The buyer will not pay for shipping and handling.

There are many ways that you can market your shipping cost. Keep in mind that people do not like to pay for shipping.

Shipping Tips

These are some ideas to help you on your way. Do not think that you are locked into your first choice. Try many options and find what works best for your business. Study other online businesses to see what they offer. Keep a log of the results so you can compare the outcome.

If you are not careful, shipping costs could end up eating all of your profits. Take some time to decide what will work best for you and your art collectors.
