In this post, I am going to share with you why you should have an artist blog and why you should be blogging on a consistent schedule. I am also going to over some blogging tips that will save you time.

According to Internetworldstats, there are over 3.5 billion internet users in 2017 and the number continues to increase.

Let’s take a moment to think about this.

You can reach over 3.5 billion people online.

Is it realistic to say that you will reach 3.5 billion people?

I say that the odds are stacked against you.

However, if you market your art business correctly, you can reach a lot of people who are interested in your art and your message.

How can you do this? How can you attract people who are interested in purchasing your art?

The answer is simple. Create content your target audience is searching for online.

The theory is easy but the execution is a little more difficult and will take a lot of planning and work.

But the time invested in blogging will be well worth it if you are selling more art.

Blogging Statistics


First, let’s go over some interesting stats about blogging and what it can do for your art business.


Those are solid statistics.

Some statistics that really jumped out are, 61% of US customers made a purchase through a blog and over 150 million people in the US read blogs regularly.

That means 91 million US residents have made a purchase from a blog.

That number is continuing to rise as we speak.

Can you imagine if just a small percentage of that number found your blog and purchased your art?

Wouldn’t that make you do the happy dance?

This can happen for you and it will as long as you put in the effort.

The hardest part will be starting. Saying it is important to have a blog is easy, knowing where to start and how to start is the difficult part.

I have been involved with online sale since the early 2000’s and I have seen many changes over the years. One thing I have noticed is that digital content marketing (blogging) is more important than ever if you want to be noticed online.

There are more artists trying to sell art online than ever before.

How can you have your art stand out?

The answer is simple.

You have to write content that will attract your target audience.

Here is how online marketing works.

People use search engines to find the information they are looking for.

Search engines have built a sophisticated algorithm that will suggest the most relevant content to the query that was typed in the search bar.

The best content wins the race and will be ranked number one in Google’s search.

People scroll through the results and click on a link that attracts them. Most people will click on one of the top three results. That is where you will want to be if you want more traffic to your artist website. You want to strive to be number one. But as long as you are in the top three you will see a large amount of traffic.

Writing content that ranks high in the search is how you will drive traffic to your site. The more content you write the more traffic your site will receive. The more traffic that your site receives the higher your chance will be to land a sale.

Look at it this way, if you went fishing do you think you would have a better chance catching fish with one hook in the water or a hundred hooks in the water?  If I was depended on that fish for dinner, I would rather have 100 hooks in the water.

Blogging Platform

You will need a blogging platform also known as a CMS (Content Managment System) for your artist blog. A blog could be incorporated into your artist gallery of separate.

You will have an easier time directing people to your artwork if your blog and art gallery is on one platform. Using different sites will make more work for you but might be necessary if you are providing other services such as art tutorials.

Review your art business goals to decide what will be best for you.

There are two CMS options for your blog. You can use a free service like Blogger or you can use a software like WordPress.

Blogger is free to use and is very easy to operate. You can add text, images, and videos to your posts in minutes. The negative is that if you are blogging for a business, you will be limited with what you can do with the look of the blog. There are a limited amount of templates you will be able to choose from that will make it difficult to match your brand. You are limited to what you can do with Blogger.

I started with blogger just because I knew nothing about blogging. The more I learned about blogging, the more I realized I need something more. That is when I learned about WordPress.

If you are serious about selling art online I recommend using WordPress for your artist website and artist blogging platform.

This site is built on a WordPress platform with a Studio Genesis Theme.

You can see how easy it is to separate the different categories you might have. I have a blog, a category for eBooks, courses and a way for people to purchase prints of my artwork and order commissioned drawings. You can see that I do not heavily promote my commissioned drawings and that is because I am constantly booked two years in advance.

You will need a hosting service if you are going to use WordPress.

I use and recommend HostGator  for a hosting service. I could not be happier with their product and customer service.

HostGator makes it easy to have your WordPress site up in minutes. If you need assistance, customer service is available 24/7.

Go to HostGator. Set up your WordPress artist blog. Go to WordPress Resource. Learn some basics about using your new WordPress site. Set up a schedule that works for you for writing posts.

It is that easy! You just have to start.

Other Blogging Platforms

Here are some other blogging platforms you might want to consider using. Take a look at them and see what they have to offer. Decide on what will be best for your business.

There are many more services available but these will give you a good start and an idea of what to look for.

If you are planning to sell art online long-term, I highly recommend WordPress. I have tried other platforms and after my business grew, I knew I needed more than what those platforms had to offer. The time spent moving to WordPress could have been time spent in the studio. If I knew back then what I know now I would have just started with WordPress.


Content Marketing

Content marketing – AKA blogging – is now more powerful than just concentrating on SEO.

SEO is still important and you will want to become familiar with at least the basics. 

SEO allows Google and other search engines understand what your blog or site has to offer.

Content, however, builds relationships and trust with customers. Your content will establish your authority in your field and will give you an edge over your competition.

SEO and content go hand in hand. You will want to focus on both. One does not work without the other.

What is content marketing?

Content marketing is telling your story. Yes, that is all it is. You are telling your story to people. It is like talking with your friends.

All you have to do is write posts about your art journey, inspirations, and the story behind your art. That is how you sell are by blogging.

It is important for you to give valuable information for your readers. Content found on Google Search is free traffic (organic traffic) and will lead to potential sales and followers.

Why Is Blogging Important Today?

In today’s world, there are so many tools to help an artist succeed. You have blogging, social media, video, audio, SlideShare and email marketing. All of these tools will help you build your art business and can work together. 

Because you are an artist working alone, your marketing time is limited. It is important to focus on the things that are in your control. The things that you own.

You want to build your business on land you own not rented land. What I mean is this, your blog and email list are things you own. You will always have a way to reach your audience from your email list and blog as long as there is the internet.

Social media is an excellent tool but it is not guaranteed to be around long-term.

Do you remember MySpace, Friendster, Orkut, or Yahoo! Buzz? These are social media networks that just could not make it.

If you started your art business on one of these platforms and didn't have an artist website, blog or email list, you lost everything. You would have to start all over or just through in the towel. Do not put yourself in that position. Protect your assets.

Build an artist website, blog and grow your email list. Use the other mediums to drive traffic to your sites.

In this post, I have talked about the importance of blogging, some platforms that are available for blogging, how to build your art business on land you own, a content marketing success story and how to use other mediums to drive traffic to your site to increase the chance of you landing sales.

There is a lot to think about when you are blogging. But remember, the more you learn and the harder you work, the better your chance to be found online will be. Market to the Right People

Most artists do not like to hear the word marketing. I hear so many artists say, “I am an artist, not a marketer.”

That will be fine if you are creating art for a hobby. But if you are planning on selling your art you will also need to be a marketer.

Marketing is easier than you think. All you are doing is making people aware of your art and giving them a way to purchase your products. It is as simple as that.

One mistake I see from artists who are new to marketing is that they market to a wide group of people. This will build brand awareness but not everyone will want to purchase your art. Marketing to people who will not be interested in purchasing your art will be a waste of your time.

Your goal is to attract people to your site who have an interest in what you paint or draw. This is done by writing posts about the subjects you specialize in.

Let’s say that you are known for painting boats. You probably paint boats because you have a passion for boats and the water.

Write some detailed information about specific things you know about boats or the areas you have visited that relate to boats.

People who are interested in learning more about the topics you have written about will find you in Google’s search. Those people are your target audience. The chance of you selling your art increases because they too have a passion for what you create.

By creating content, you are providing value to a customer while building brand awareness. The people who are reading your posts are also learning that you are an artist.


Success Will Not Happen Overnight

Most artists stop blogging way too early. They get all excited and after a month of posting blogs they give up because they do not see any instant results. This is good news for you, there will be less competition you will have to worry about.

Blogging is for the long-term. I didn't see real results until 6-9 months after I started to blog. I have learned a lot during those months, and I will keep learning as time passes and you will too.

If you are interested in having a successful art business or any business blogging will be a powerful tool for you. Do not think of it as an instant sale. Think of it as building a loyal following of your brand.

You have worked hard to enhance your artistic sale, now it is time to profit from them. Start separating yourself from the other artists who are not blogging and start building your online presence. In a year from now, you will be so happy you started today.
