Fine Art Marketing

Fine art sales have steadily increased over the past ten years and they do not look like they will slow down anytime soon.

Art buyers now have the opportunity to search for their favorite art from artists around the world.

The global online art market consists of buyers and sellers trading via the internet in services, articles, works-of-art, and culture that are commonly associated with the various arts. With the rise of the internet came the rise of the art e-commerce and auction market – baring that in mind online art sales are forecast to increase to a total of 9.32 billion U.S. dollars by 2024. Over the past five years, the market has seen growth and its current value is estimated to be over four and a half billion U.S. dollars. Comparatively, the global art market was valued at almost 64 billion U.S. dollars. (Source: Statista)

All successful businesses, large and small research their competition and target audience.

Marketing and promoting your artwork takes time and will cost money if you are paying for advertisements.

Learning more about your target audience (people interested in your artistic style) and knowing where they hang out online is essential for the growth of your art business.

You will be wasting a lot of time and money if you are marketing your artwork to people not interested in purchasing art.

You need to know:

  • Who your ideal art collectors are
  • Their average age
  • Where they reside
  • Yearly income
  • If they have a family
  • Where they spend their time on the internet

The information you gather will help you to develop a marketing strategy that caters to them.

Here are some articles to help you learn more about your target audience:

How To Research An Artist

Tools for discovering artist websites and artist blogs

Keysearch – Is one of my favorite SEO tools and is extremely affordable compared to other SEO tools.

Most SEO tools have a monthly fee of over $90.

Keysearch is under $20 per month, and it is straightforward to use.

They also send you emails on some best practices.

Keysearch Features:

  • In-depth keyword research
  • Keyword difficulty checker
  • SEO Competition Analysis
  • Rank tracking
  • Brainstorm Niche ideas

All you have to do is type in the keywords of an artist you would like to discover and hit enter.

All you have to do is type in the keywords of an artist you would like to discover and hit enter.

I typed “horse paintings for sale”

The top 9 websites will be displayed.

Some of the links will not be artist’s websites like Etsy and Amazon, but you can always look to see who is selling art on those platforms.

Keysearch will also provide you with a list of similar keywords that you can click on to discover even more artists selling art like yours.

Google Keyword Tool – provides a keyword research tool that I used in the past.

This tool will not help you discover artists, but it will tell you what is trending.

Type in specific keywords that describe your art, and the amount of monthly traffic will be displayed.

This number will give you an idea of how many people are searching for art like yours.

Social media platforms – Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are great tools to help you discover different artists marketing their art online.

You will also be able to study what marketing strategies are performing well for them on their social media business pages.

Pinterest – Pinterest is another excellent tool for discovering artists. All you have to do is type in a style of art in Pinterest’s search bar, and a list of artwork will be displayed.

Click on the images that are similar to yours. The link should direct you to their website or selling platform.

Art market research, discovering people who are buying art and people who bought art is valuable information that will help you to sell more art online.

How To Research Art

The tools I mentioned earlier are not just for discovering artists selling art online but can also be used for researching art that is being sold online.

Just type in keywords like:

  • Horse paintings for sale
  • Horse art for sale
  • Horse artwork for sale
  • Horse oils paintings for sale

A list of art will be displayed for you to research.

Take some time every month to research new art that is being posted for sale online.

The information you gather will help you to revise your marketing strategy and inspire you to create more art.
