The holiday season is a great time for artists to increase their customer base. Have a plan to make this season profitable for your art business.
It is mid-September and businesses are starting to promote their products for the holiday shoppers. How many times have you walked into a store and say “I cannot believe they already have holiday merchandise out.”
Seeing winter holiday merchandise displayed in September makes the end of summer real. Most of us do not want to let the summer go. When we see holiday decor, we know what is to come. Cold weather, shorter days, the stress to get everything done for gatherings and the list goes on.
Why do businesses do this to us? Why are they cutting the end of our summer short? They know you are probably not going to purchase anything today for the holidays.
Learn From the Big Companies
Let’s forget for a minute that first feeling that you get when you see the first-holiday decor displayed in your favorite store. Look at it in a different way.
How can I learn from this?
Why are they advertising the holidays now?
Would it benefit my art business?
Shouldn’t they be selling merchandise for the season we are in?
What is Marketing?
Marketing – the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.
The concept of marketing is simple. You want to promote your artwork. If you market it properly, you will have a better chance of selling more of your artwork this holiday season. That should be your goal, to sell as much of your artwork as possible.
The more that you sell this holiday season will reflect what will happen the first two quarters of next year as long as your buyers are happy with their purchase.
Let’s say that you have gained ten new customers this holiday season. They are thrilled with your work. Those ten people will give your art as gifts. Now 20 new people know about your artwork. Those 20 people will tell their family and friends. It is said that a good experience will be shared with three people. If we do the math, that will be 60 people who now know about your artwork.
That is very powerful information for the growth of your business. That is why you need to plan for holiday sales today!
Marketing is a Science
The more you learn about marketing, the more that you realize you do not know. That might be one of the reasons you love art to learn how to create things. Treat marketing like you do with your art. Keep learning.
There are multiple variables that you will learn as you study marketing. You want to learn how to grab someone’s attention. Then you need to learn how to retain their short, medium and long-term attention. If you can accomplish this, you will have a long term buyer.
There are studies on behavior. Colors that are used on “Buy It Now” buttons will reflect on how many conversions the page will receive. Pricing and the order of pricing makes a difference with the conversion rate. The list goes on and on.
How exciting is this? The more you learn, the more successful your business will become. If you do not spend the time learning, you might as well be playing darts blindfolded.

The reason I am sharing this with you is for you to have a successful holiday season. Take the time now to make a game plan on how you will achieve your goals. There will be a learning curve this season that you will be able to apply to next year. Analyze the outcome of what you did. This will be powerful information for next year.
