Art Marketing Plan for Artists
There are many layers involved in a successful art marketing plan. Artists who do well at selling art online have developed a solid art marketing foundation.
Visit Sell Art Online Startup Plan to learn more about the five steps you need to focus on to build a solid foundation.
A strong foundation consists of:
- Online Art Gallery
- Content Marketing
- Emil Marketing
- Social Media Marketing
Art marketing doesn’t seem so overwhelming once you break it down into five categories.
Today’s post will be focusing on a content marketing plan and a social media plan for you.
Pinterest Marketing Plan for Artists
Pinterest, in my opinion, is one of the most valuable social media sites an artist can use.
Pinterest is not just a social media platform. It is also a search engine. People can use Pinterest’s search bar to find the content they are interested in.
Another difference from Pinterest and other social media platforms is, your content on Pinterest will always be searchable.
Just like any art marketing plan you will need to try different ideas to see what will work best for your business and audience.
Here are some best practices you will want to consider when you are creating images for Pinterest.
- Taller images
- Add a link
- Keyword rich description
- Apply for Rich Pins
Taller images – If you visit Pinterest you will soon realize most of the images are taller and narrow.
Businesses using Pinterest for marketing soon realized if they wanted to have their images stand out they need to create taller images.
Go to Pinterest and scroll down.
What is the first thing that catches your eyes?
Your eyes will gravitate to the tall colorful images.
There are many image editors you can use to create the perfect Pinterest image.
If you want to create professional looking images with little effort, try Canva.
Canva makes it easy to create the right size images for social media platforms.
Canva provides up-to-date templates for all the most popular social media platforms.
All you do is pick the template for the social media site you want to create an image for, then start designing. You do not have to worry about resizing your image so they will display properly on different sites.
If you are looking for something with more features I recommend Adobe Photoshop CC. (Amazon Affiliate Link) There are so many things you can do with Photoshop to really make your images stand out.
However, you will need to spend some time learning the software. The good new is there are some great tutorials on Youtube that will help you to get started.
Add a link – There is no reason to waste your time on Pinterest if you are not going to link back to a blog post or a landing page for art you are promoting.
The goal is to attract people with a tall, colorful, beautiful Image and drive them back to where you would like them to visit.
If you are uploading an image from your computer all you need to do is add a destination URL in the box provided.
The other way you can upload an image is by directly uploading it from a post that is already active. You will be able to choose which image from the post you would like to be pinned.
Keyword rich description – Because Pinterest is a search engine and people type queries in the search bar, you will want to add a keyword rich description describing the image and the site they will visit if they click on the link.
Think about what people will be typing in the search bar to find your pin. Add that information to the description.
Apply for Rich Pins – The main difference between a rich pin and a regular pin is the rich pin shows the title of the article in bold, website link from where the article came from, and a clickable link to the article.
The enhanced pins will help your images stand out in Pinterest’s feed.
Visit Pinterest Rich Pins to view the process of improving your website with rich pins. I highly recommend you validate your site with rich pins. The process will only take a few minutes and will be well worth your time.
Pinterest Marketing Strategy for Artists
For you to start a Pinterest marketing strategy, you will want to review your art marketing goals.
What are you trying to accomplish?
Do you want to sell a new piece of art you created?
Do you want to promote prints of your art?
Do you want to promote a blog post?
After you have decided what you would like to accomplish put it into action. Decide what you would like to promote and create a beautiful, eye-catching image that will make people want to click on.
Create Pinnable Images
You might want to consider creating pinnable images for your blog posts.
People love to share things they like. If someone likes a post you wrote or some of your art, make it easy for them to pin it.
The problem that you will face is the space a Pinterest image takes on a blog post. People will have to scroll down for days before they get to the content you wrote.
That is a good way to lose your readers attention.
I do have a solution for you.
You can create an image for Pinterest and hide it from the post.
If someone likes your post and wants to share it on Pinterest they will click on the Pin it button and images will appear for them to chose which image they would like to pin to their board.People love to share things they like.Click To Tweet

How to Hide Pinterest Images in a WordPress Post
Now that you have created the perfect Pinterest image for your blog post, it is time to hide it.
Why would you want to do this?
The size of a Pinterest image takes up too much space. However, when someone wants to pin your blog post to their Pinterest board, you want to provide them a beautiful image they can pin.
Hiding your image allows you to provide a pinnable image on your post without the readers seeing it.
When someone clicks the Pin It button, a preview of images will be available for the reader to choose from. The image you hide will also be displayed. More times than not they will pick the Pinterest image you have created.

Here is the HTML code you will need to use to hide an image in a WordPress post.
Now when you publish your post the image will not be displayed on the post but will be available for people to pin.
Are you using WordPress for your blog?
I highly recommend you use a WordPress site if you are serious about selling your art online.
If you decide to use WordPress you will need a hosting service.
I use and recommend HostGator (Affiliate Link) for a hosting service. I could not be happier with their product and customer service.
HostGator makes it easy to have your WordPress site up in minutes. If you need assistance, customer service is available 24/7.
An easy way for you to gain extra traffic to your site is by making it easy for people to share your content on your reader’s favorite social media platforms.
There are many plugins available for WordPress that will make this possible.
All you have to do is upload a plugin that will work best for your brand and activate it.
Then the magic begins. Your posts will have social share buttons available for your readers to click and share. You are now reaching a larger audience.
I have tried so many plugins and have found positives and negatives for each plugin until I have found Social Warfare (Affiliate Link).
Social Warfare is what I have on this website.
Social Warfare is a paid plugin but in my opinion worth every penny. This plugin allows your posts and pages to be shared on the most popular social networks your readers are on.
You can decide where you would like the social share buttons to be displayed as well as have floating buttons like you see on this post.
You also have the option to pick what images and text will be displayed when your reader shares your content. This is the perfect plugin to help you share and brand your art business.Social Warfare is a paid plugin but in my opinion worth every penny.Click To Tweet
