Have you ever heard the term keywords?

A keyword is defined as a word or concept of great significance.

People use keywords everywhere online.

When someone types in a word or phrase into a search box they are using keywords.

When you type in a word or phase in Pinterest’s search bar, you are using keywords.

The content that Pinterest displays in the feed, relates to the keywords you entered into the search bar.

How does knowing what a keyword is, help you to sell art online?

Understanding keywords and how they are used will help you to understand how your target audience finds content.

Keywords will also help you to create content that will be of interest to them.

Do you need to know about keywords to sell art online?

The answer is yes if you would like your art to be discovered online.

By understanding the basics and implementing some fundamental strategies, you will be separating yourself from many artists selling art online.

I will not go into too much detail about Keywords and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) because it can become very overwhelming.

In this post, I will only talk about what you will need to know about keywords so you can start to make a presence online.

What Are Keywords

Have you ever gone to Google’s search bar and typed something like “Best Paintbrushes?” or “How to clean artist paintbrushes?” or “Best place to purchase art supplies online?”

What you type into Google’s search bar or any search engine are keywords or keyword phrases.

Keywords can be one word or a phrase consisting of several words.

Whatever words are typed into a search bar is classified as a keyword or phrase.

Google will suggest the most relevant content based on the keywords used in the search bar.

As an artist selling art online, you want the keywords on your pages and posts to be relevant to what people are searching for so they have a better chance to see your fine art among the other artists.

Why Are Keywords Important

The keywords you choose to add to your content will determine what type of traffic and how much traffic your artist’s website receives.

You must know the needs of your art collectors so you can create content that ranks well organically and will drive them to your site.

Using wrong keyword phrases in your content could drive people not interested in purchasing art to your site.

For example, if you painted a house and your keyword phrase is “house painting,” you will be ranking for businesses that paint houses, not oil paintings of houses.

What Do You Need To Know About Keywords

You will want to know your unique customer’s voice.

The words and phrases that they use in the search bar will determine if your content is found or not found on the internet.

For example, if your content is focused on the keyword phrase “horse painting” and the people you are trying to reach use the words “horse paintings,” your content will not be displayed in Google’s search.

For example, “horse painting” was searched 4,927,390 times in July 2016, while “horse paintings” was only searched 3,656,980 times.

The search volume between “painting” and “paintings” is over a million searches.

Learning more about your target audience and the vocabulary that they use will increase the chances of you being found online.

Can finding keywords people use in Google’s search bar be a challenge?

The best way to discover what keywords your art collectors use to search for content online is to listen to your audience. Find your target audience on social media networks and learn how they communicate and what vocabulary they use.

Free Keyword Tool

Below are some keyword tools I use when searching for new keyword ideas.

Google Trends is a free tool provided by Google. If you want to learn what is trending, give Google Trends a try.

You can find the volume a particular topic receives by typing in the keywords into the search.

You can also discover what is trending in a particular country and state, which will help you with your marketing plan.

Google Adwords is another free tool from Google that will help you find how your target audience is searching for content. You type in a keyword and will discover how many times that phrase was searched in a particular month.

Knowing who your target audience is, where to find them, and how to communicate with them will help you to build a strong business.

You can also use search engines like Google to discover keywords your audience is searching for.

Type in a keyword phrase you want to rank for and scroll down to the “search related to” section.

Google provides a list of related searches people are doing for similar content.
