Let’s talk about why is it so essential to discover how to increase site traffic?

Your artist website is like a brick and mortar store on a very busy road.

How long can a brick and mortar store stay in business if nobody walks through the doors?

We see businesses close all around us because nobody is walking in the stores and purchasing goods.

Even large companies we grew up with like Sears, Toys R Us, Rite Aid, to name a few, are closing shop because more and more people are shopping online.

Gili Malinsky wrote a post and created an eye-opening slideshow for Bankrate that showcases large named businesses that are closing their doors.

As Americans do more and more of their shopping online, thousands of brick-and-mortar stores are vanishing from malls, shopping centers, and free-standing locations.

Retail closures hit a record high in 2017, with nearly 7,000 stores disappearing. The trend is expected to continue in 2018, although not on a scale as massive. So far, more than 1,770 store closings have been announced. Some chains are phasing out stores over a period of years.

It makes sense that more and more brick and mortar stores are closing because more people are purchasing goods online.

Revenue has to come in for a business to stay afloat.

A product can not be sold if nobody walks through the doors.

The same is true for your artist website.

You will not sell your artwork if nobody visits your site.

You must spend time marketing your brand online, so people know you exist and that you have products for sale.

If you fail to do so, you will be looking at your artwork hanging on your walls.

Before I talk about how to increase website traffic and sell more art, I would like to go over something that is often overlooked.

You need to have a clear vision of what the objectives are for your website.

  • What would you like to achieve with your artist website?
  • Are you interested in selling original art?
  • Would you like to sell prints of your original artwork?
  • Would you like to draw more people to your local events or promote a gallery your art is being displayed in?
  • Are you selling tutorials or other products?
  • How much money would you like to generate from your website?

If you do not know what your objectives are, you will not be able to design an art marketing strategy that will produce positive results.

Once you have a clear vision of what you would like to achieve for your artist website and you have your goals written down, let’s take a look at some strategies that increase website traffic so you can sell more art online.

Art Marketing Strategy

Now is the time to start working on a marketing strategy.

Your art marketing strategy is nothing more than action plans you create to accomplish your goals.

The plans you write will continuously be changing as your business grows.

For example, if one of the objectives is to sell four paintings in one month, your action steps might look like:

  • Paint 4 new paintings
  • Photograph completed artwork

(Note: You should develop strategies for all of the different ways you will be promoting your artwork such as blogging, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, etc.)

It is also necessary for you to analyze the progress of your art marketing strategies so you can discover what is working for you and what is not working.

Where To Market Your Art

I am often asked where is the best place to market artwork.

My response will always be “Everywhere.”

Share your art with everyone.

Tell your friend and family about all of the new art you have created.

Show images of your new art to your coworkers.

Post your artwork on all of the social media sites you are on.

Send newsletters to your email list.

Write blog posts about your art, talk about your art, and show your creativity.

Common ways to increase website traffic:

  • Website
  • Blog
  • Network
  • Social media networks
  • Email list
  • Third-party websites

How do you find websites online?

You probably search Google’s search, a friend requested it, or maybe you are referred from a post on social media.

When you search on Google, what link do you usually click on?

Is it the first link, the second link, or do you go to the second or third page in search?

Most people never go past the third link in the search results.

A website on the second page in search does not exist in a marketer’s eyes.

If you want to drive traffic to your artist website, you have to rank on page 1 in the search engines.

You might be thinking, “But what about people sharing my site on social media?”

Those people would have to know your site exists for them to share your work on their social media platforms.

That brings us right back to the importance of ranking on the first page in the search results.

How do websites rank high in the search results?

They all produce valuable content that readers are searching for.

Yes, there are other factors such as SEO, link building, website authority, keywords, etc. but the valuable content is arguably the most crucial factor for ranking high in the search results.

This why most people click on the first three links in the search results.

We have learned to trust that Google and other search engines will only recommend the best content available for a query typed in the search bar.

So what should you do if you are interested in driving more traffic to your site?

The answer is simple; write valuable content that relates to your artwork and art business.

The more content you write, the better your chance will be to rank high in the search results.

The higher you rank in the search results, the more people will visit your site.

When people discover your site, they will start to share it with their friends and family. Once you can get the ball rolling, you will begin to see your traffic increase more than you could have ever imagined.
