Are you having a difficult time driving traffic to your artist’s website? Would you like to increase your traffic so you can sell more art? In this article, I will share how to generate free traffic with basic WordPress SEO so you can increase your traffic and art sales.
How to Generate Free Traffic with Basic SEO
How would you like to receive a large amount of free traffic to your art blog?
I have some good news. It is possible.
Instead of spending money on “boosting” your Facebook posts, spend time writing for your blog.
Instead of spending money on Instagram ads, spend time writing more art blog posts.
I want to clarify that it takes time for search engines to index your site, but in time, your art blog will start generating a lot of traffic.
Read How My Blog on Art Marketing Reached 25,000 Monthly Views for more information on how I built up my blog. (As of me updating this post, my art blog now receives over 75,000 page views a month, and it continues to grow.)
Below are the strategies I used to grow my online audience.
What Is SEO?
Before we start, I want to let you know that it takes a little more effort than just publishing blog posts.
Initially, I thought that as long as I published many articles, I would see my traffic increase.
I was wrong.
My traffic only started to increase after I took an SEO class.
I will share with you some basic SEO strategies that will help you see the results you are hoping for.
SEO is the abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization.
Why is it important to learn about SEO?
Imagine that you spent hours a week writing posts about your artwork.
You are doing everything a successful artist does to promote their art business.
You are writing posts about new artwork, tutorials, and your latest news.
After a few months, you realize your posts are not being seen.
You feel discouraged that you wasted all of that time for nothing.
Learning about SEO will show you how content is found on the internet. The information you will significantly increase the views of your posts.
Generate free traffic with basic SEO should be one of your primary marketing goals.
That means that you do not have to pay for leads and advertisements.
Think about this for a moment. I wrote a post that brought over 2,800 views to my artist website within one day. I did not have to spend one cent on that traffic. All I needed to do was to educate myself about SEO and write valuable content that would be helpful to the reader.
I wrote posts four years ago that still drive traffic to my site because I rank in the top 3 of Google’s search for those keywords.

Basic SEO
Before I start sharing with you how to generate free traffic with basic SEO, I want to review what basic SEO is.
If you just started marketing your art, you probably heard and seen these three letters: SEO.
SEO is the abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization.
In short, by optimizing your website and blog, you will make it easier for search engines like Google to understand what your content is about. This will help Google and other search engines like Bing to refer your posts to the right people. This group of people is also known as your target audience. Your target audience is the people who are interested in your artistic style.
When you are building your art blog, you have two goals. The first goal is to have people visit your blog. The second goal is to drive traffic from your art blog to your website to sell your art.
Google uses an algorithm that finds quality content that has relevant information for what the reader is searching for.
Here is a screenshot of a Google search I did for “Art That Sells”.

My post was ranked number one in the search results. But that is not all. Pinterest is promoting my post. This one article has almost 5,000 social shares and is still driving a large amount of traffic to my site. (As of this time updating this post, that one article has now received over 17,000 social shares.)
A simple way to increase your SEO is to create content people are interested in.
By creating high-quality content, Google will rank your posts higher in the search results.
Google is smart and will figure out what your content offers and provide it to the appropriate people.
Think of it this way. Let’s say that you were looking for a recipe for chocolate moose.
You type in the search box “recipes for chocolate mousse.” Google knows what you are looking for and will provide you with the best content.
If Google didn’t have this sophisticated algorithm, you would be clicking link after link, not finding what you were looking for.
You and everyone else would probably stop using Google to search for information.
One way and maybe the most important way to generate free traffic with basic SEO is to write the best content you can.
To sum it up, you want to optimize your blog to make it easy for Google to know what your content is about while having quality information for the reader.
How To Optimize Your Blog Posts
So many people ask, “How do I get more traffic?”
The answer is simple. Create great content for your niche.
In time, Google will figure out what your blog has to offer.
People who search for topics on your blog will find your posts. The content has to be perfect for this to work.
If you do not put your all into it, Google will list other blogs that have better content.
Google wants to give the best content to its readers.
The best way to optimize your blog is to optimize the content for your readers, not for Google.
Here are some tips to think about when you write your posts:
- Write to the Reader.
- Know what your reader’s interests are. Knowing what your readers are interested in will give you valuable information for when it is time to write your posts.
- Be consistent with the quality of your posts. All of your posts should be your best. Google only wants to share the best.
- Create content that is relevant to your niche. Being consistent with what you write about will make it easier for Google to know what your blog is about.
