Would you like to add categories to your WordPress blog? In this post, I will show how to create a WordPress Category to your blog so you can make it a better experience for your readers.
How To Create A WordPress Category
What is a category for WordPress?
According to WPBeginner:
“In the WordPress nomenclature, both categories and tags are known as taxonomies. Their sole purpose is to sort your content to improve the usability of your site. Meaning when a user comes to your site, they can easily browse through your content by topic rather than browsing chronologically which is how blogs were initially setup.”
When you go to a website, you will find a menu bar at the top of the page.

This is where you can add your categories which will make it easier for your reader to find the content they are searching for.
The main menu tabs are known as a parent category. You can also have subcategories also known as child categories. This allows you to break a subject into more specific topics.
How To Add Categories In WordPress Menu
Here is how to access the Category section in your WordPress dashboard.
Hover over Posts on the left-hand sidebar and click on Categories.
The following are the fields on Categories.
- Name− Enter the unique name of a category you would like to create.
- Slug− A word or phrase that is chosen to describe your post. It is specified in the tags URL.
- Parent− By selecting the parent category from the drop-down, you can set a category as a sub-category or keep it as None. Keeping the option as none will keep your category as a parent category.
- Description− Add a brief description of your category. This is optional.
After you have completed filling out the fields, click on Add New Category button to save the category you have just created.
After clicking on Add New Category, the newly created category will get displayed on the right side of the page. This is where you can see how many posts are in each category.
How To Edit WordPress Categories
Hover over a particular Category you would like to edit. Here you will have a few options that will be displayed below the Category name.
You will have the choice of clicking on Edit or Quick Edit.
How To Delete WordPress Categories
Hover over a Category you would like to delete.
Click on the Delete link.
Confirm that you would like to delete the category.
Conclusion:
Now that you have an understanding of the WordPress Category Settings, you can take some time to decide what categories would be best for your audience.
