In this blog post, you’ll learn how to add Woocommerce WordPress Categories in a few simple steps. You will also get the benefits of each step to decide which one is best for your situation. Let’s get started.
WooCommerce Product Categories
You are uploading your art to your new WooCommerce WordPress artist website?
Large galleries with a variety of art make for some great viewing, but this can also lead to difficulties in organizing all the images.
Is there a way to organize your art on your website to make it easier for your buyers to find what they are looking for?
WooCommerce does allow you to create product categories that will separate your art into subjects.
Organizing your products into different categories will make it a more enjoyable shopping experience for your art collectors and inspire them to come back for more.
You can also add your product categories to your primary navigation if you choose to.
Now that we have discussed how important it is for galleries to organize their products let’s go over adding product categories.
By the end of this post, you will know…
- How to decide what categories will be best for you
- Two ways to create WooCommerce categories
- How to add categories to your main menu bar
Plan Before Creating Categories
Plan before you build your WooCommerce category drop-down menu
Categories are like folders for a filing cabinet.
Each folder will be titled with a specific topic like car insurance, car taxes, home insurance, etc.
These folders make it easy to locate important documents you are looking for.
The objective of a product category is to make it easy for art collectors to view the art they are interested in purchasing.
Take a few minutes to write down all of the different subjects you paint or draw and write down all of the different products you will be selling.
Below is an example if you specialize in horse paintings.
Art Gallery (Main menu – all of your original paintings will go into this category)
- American Quarter Horse Paintings (subcategory – only specific paintings will go into this category)
- Mustang Paintings (subcategory – only specific paintings will go into this category)
- Friesian Horse Paintings (subcategory – only specific paintings will go into this category)
- Clydesdale Horse Prints (subcategory – only specific paintings will go into this category)

The second way is to hover over Products and click Categories.
Insert the name.
You can leave the slug empty. It will generate one automatically from the name you inserted.
Leave the parent category as none.
Filling a description of the category and upload an image.
Click Add New Category.
All of the products you upload can now be assigned a category when you upload new products by clicking the Product Name in the Products Category box on the left.
Every product must be assigned to a category. A default category will be automatically created if the product is not assigned to any other categories. If you do not assign a product to a category, the product will be assigned to a default category called “Uncategorized.”
Follow the instructions below to switch the categories. Assigning a category will the “Uncategorized” because it will no longer be the default.
Add WooCommerce Categories To Menu Bar
Now that you have your products separated into different categories, you might be asking yourself, how do I add a category to a menu in WordPress?
To do this, hover over Appearance on the left menu bar and click Menus.
Click Categories and select all of the categories you would like to be displayed on your menu, then click Add To Menue.
Organize your categories by dragging and dropping them in the order you wish.
Create a subcategory by dropping a category in the middle of the main category, as shown below.
On your home page, you will only see the main categories displayed in the menu bar.
The subcategories will appear when you hover over the main category.
