You have heard me talk about SEO, keywords and Google’s algorithm in past posts.
I have talked about how important keywords are to rank higher in the search results.
However many people do not understand that Google does not only keep track of the main keywords of a post or site.

Google’s Mission
Google wants to provide the most valuable content available to its audience.
To help them accomplish this mission they had to create a sophisticated algorithm.
Google’s algorithm is so complex and always changing we could never begin to debunk it.
This is good news for honest businesses. Businesses that are trying to provide top quality content that relates to their site and helps their audience should rank higher in the search.
Spam sites that are trying to beat the algorithm should be penalized.
No one whats to waste their time clicking on links that have nothing to do with what they are searching for.
An important part of Google’s algorithm is the keywords. These words help Google to understand what a post or website is about.
However, spam sites learned the importance of keywords and they started filling their content with keywords that they wanted to rank for. This is known as keyword spamming or keyword stuffing.
Google soon realized what sites were doing so they had to change their algorithm. All of the changes have made it easier for Google to understand search queries (what people type in the search bar). The new changes have made it a better experience for Google’s users.
What Are LSI Keywords
Have you heard about LSI keywords?
LSI (latent Semantic Indexing) are words or phrases that support the main keywords of a post or site.
One benefit of using LSI keywords is that it will help you to not stuff your content with keywords and have your post penalized.
For example, a post that uses the keyword “flower painting” over and over would not match up with the query in the search results as well as a post that uses the same keyword but also uses LSI keywords such as “oil painting” “rose painting” and “red rose art”.
Another benefit is that the content would make more sense to the reader. When you are writing a blog post, you are writing for your reader as well as Google. You want Google to know what your post is about as well as making it enjoyable and readable for your reader. LSI keywords make this possible for you to do.
How To Find LSI Keywords
There are a lot of free tools available to help you find the best LSI keywords for your blog posts.
Here is a list of tools I frequently use:
Google Search Engine
Google search is so obvious but often overlooked.
One of the easiest ways for you to get a list of LSI keywords is by doing a search in Google.
Pick a keyword or keyword phrase you would like your post to rank for and do a search in Google.
As you start to type in the phrase, Google will automatically provide you a list of words or phrases that match your keywords.
These are semantically related keywords that you can incorporate into your content. Just make sure that the words or phrases make sense to the reader. Always remember that the content you write has to provide value to your audience. Your goal is to build your readers trust so they will purchase your art.
For example, I did a search for “flower paintings for sale”.
Google suggested:
- Flower paintings for Mother’s Day
- Flower paintings for beginners
- Flower paintings for a living room
- Flower painting for Baby’s room
- Flower paintings in the UK
Another thing I do while I am doing a search for a keyword on Google is I scroll down to the bottom of the search result page.
At the bottom of the page, you will find a section called “searches related to the keyword”
Using the same keyword phrase “flower painting for sale”
Google’s search related to… provided:
- Flower painting easy
- Flower painting abstract
- Flower paintings famous
- Flower paintings acrylic
- Flower paintings watercolor
- Flower paintings images
- Famous floral artist
- Flower paintings Tumblr
These are all excellent LSI keywords that you can use. Go through the list and see what keywords relate to your post and try to incorporate them into the content.
Google Trends
Google trends is another great free tool that I use to see how well specific keyword phrases are trending.
This tool will let you see whether or not your keywords are popular amongst users. You will be able to decide on what content you should be writing to generate more traffic to your art blog.
Google Trends also provides you information on regional interests and popular related searches. This is a tool that you will want to bookmark.
LSIGraph.com
I first heard of this free tool from Leslie Samuel’s Learning with Leslie’s Podcast.
He talked about how he uses LSIGraph.com to help him with his keyword marketing strategy so I decided to give it a try. I now use it every day
It is simple to use. Once you are directed to the site you will see a search bar.
Simply type in the keyword or keyword phrase and a list or relevent LSI keywords will appear.
For example, I did a search for “flower paintings for sale” and here are just a few of the phases that were generated:
- Artwork for sale
- Paintings for sale
- Poster prints
- Poster art prints
- Prints on canvas
- Fine art oil paintings
- Art canvas for sale
How to Choose the Best LSI Keyword
When you do a search for LSI keywords you are going to get a ton of results.
The amount of results you will receive will quickly become overwhelming. You will soon realize that there is no way that you can use them all.
To narrow down the list you will need to think like your audience.
What would your audience use to find the content you are writing about?
This is where learning more about your audience pays off.
Not only will you want to have an understanding of what phrases your audience will use in the search bar, but you will also need to use phrases that support your message.
Let’s use the “flower paintings for sale” example again.
Google suggested “flower paintings in the UK”.
If you are an artist the resides in the US, this phrase will not be appropriate for your content.
If you paint with watercolors you will not want to use the phrase “fine art oil paintings”.
You get the point.
Make a list of phrases that support who your audience is and the content that you are writing.
Try to include the keywords within the content making sure that the content makes sense to the reader.
You might not be able to use all of the suggestions and that is ok. Just use the best ones.
Conclusion:
It takes a lot of hard work to have your blog posts to rank higher in the search results. The amount of traffic that you will receive will definitely be worth the time invested.
Try these tools to help you to come up with LSI keywords for your blog posts.
Not only are they very powerful tools for you to use but best of all they are free.
