Before the internet, artists were spending a lot of money on marketing their art or hiring agents to sell their art for them.

The days of artists relying on others to sell their artwork at a cost has come and gone.

Today artists are taking full advantage of all the free marketing opportunities the internet is offering.

The tools outlined above are only tools.

How many articles have you read about selling art on Facebook and Instagram?

Did you create a Facebook Business Page and Instagram account?

Have your sales increased and if so by how much?

I have so many artists coming to me frustrated by the lack of sales they are receiving from social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram.

Keep in mind that the tools outlined above are just tools.

If you want to see real results you will have to spend some time learning how to use them.

The artists that you see all over social media and in the search engines are not there by accident. They worked hard and spent many hours learning how to market their artwork on the platforms they are working with.

You can have the same success but you will have to be self-motivated to put in the time required to learn about marketing on the platforms of your choice.

After you have a good amount of blog posts published you will be able to take the content you have already created and refurbished them on different mediums like social media, videos, podcasts, and eBooks.

This marketing tip will save you a ton of time because you will not have to be concerned about writing different content for each platform you are marketing on.

Now that we have talked about art marketing lets talk about how creating art in series can increase your online art sales

Series In Art Definition

Series is defined as a group or a number of related or similar things, events, etc., arranged or occurring in temporal, spatial, or other order or succession; sequence. a number of games, contests, or sporting events, with the same participants, considered as a unit: The two baseball clubs played a five-game series. (Source:Dictionary.com)

So what does series in art mean?

Series in art is a group of artwork based on a similar subject.

Artists can base a series on a subject matter (most common practice), style, size or technique.

Creating a series of art with a similar theme will make it easier for you to market your artwork.

For example, if create a horse series, the “keywords” you use for describing your horse paintings or drawings will help you to rank higher in the search engines.

Art Series Theme Ideas

Deciding what theme you are going to focus on is the first step.

This is easier than you might think.

Do not over think this process.

Start by asking yourself:

  • What subject is the easiest for you to create?
  • What subject do you enjoy creating?
  • What subject inspires you to create?
  • What subject can you see yourself creating over and over without getting bored?

The answer you give to the questions above will be your first series.

Let’s take it one step further.

You can take your subject and narrow it down even more.

Here is an example.

Let’s say that you said you have a passion for creating horse paintings.

This is a great start but you want to create a series that will help you to market your art online and build brand awareness.

The next step is to decide on what horse bread you would like to paint.

Here is an example of a series by artist Livia Dias.

Livia has been a professional artist and tutor since 2000.

Besides creating beautiful paintings with vibrant colors she has also mastered the art of marketing her artwork.

I did a simple search for rose paintings and I found her site Livia Dias Fine Art Studio and not by accident.

Why was I able to find Livia’s website?

Her site is not ranked high in the search results because she has one rose painting, she is able to rank higher in search for roses because she has a series of rose paintings.

Let’s look at the keywords she is able to rank for by creating her rose series:

  • Roses in a Vase
  • Summer Roses
  • Blooming roses
  • Passion
  • Roses
  • Roses study
  • Pink roses

Does Livia only paint roses?

No. Livia has a large variety of subjects but if you visit her site you will see that she has created a series for all of the different subjects she creates.

How Many Paintings In A Series

There is no magic number of paintings or drawings you should create for a series.

But the more you create the easier it will be for you to rank in the search engines.

The average web user won’t go past the first five listings on a search engine results page (SERP). According to a 2014 study from Advanced Web Rankings, more than 67% of all clicks on SERPs go to the top five listings. Things start to get grim when you look past those first few results. Research shows that websites on the first search engine results page receive almost 95% of web traffic, leaving only 5% for the remaining search results pages. (Source: Leverage Marketing)

If you want to sell original art online you will have to find a way to have your artwork seen. This can be accomplished by ranking high in search results, social media, and email marketing.

Creating art in series is one step you can take to start ranking higher in the search results due to the variety of keywords you will be using.

Livia is a great example of how creating art in series can help an artist build a successful online art business.
