Deciding what theme you are going to focus on is the first step.
This is easier than you might think.
Do not over think this process.
Start by asking yourself:
- What subject is the easiest for you to create?
- What subject do you enjoy creating?
- What subject inspires you to create?
- What subject can you see yourself creating over and over without getting bored?
The answer you give to the questions above will be your first series.
Let’s take it one step further.
You can take your subject and narrow it down even more.
Here is an example.
Let’s say that you said you have a passion for creating horse paintings.
This is a great start but you want to create a series that will help you to market your art online and build brand awareness.
The next step is to decide on what horse bread you would like to paint.
Here is an example of a series by artist Livia Dias.

Livia has been a professional artist and tutor since 2000.
Besides creating beautiful paintings with vibrant colors she has also mastered the art of marketing her artwork.
I did a simple search for rose paintings and I found her site Livia Dias Fine Art Studio and not by accident.
Why was I able to find Livia’s website?
Her site is not ranked high in the search results because she has one rose painting, she is able to rank higher in search for roses because she has a series of rose paintings.
Let’s look at the keywords she is able to rank for by creating her rose series:
- Roses in a Vase
- Summer Roses
- Blooming roses
- Passion
- Roses
- Roses study
- Pink roses
Does Livia only paint roses?
No. Livia has a large variety of subjects but if you visit her site you will see that she has created a series for all of the different subjects she creates.

How Many Paintings In A Series
There is no magic number of paintings or drawings you should create for a series.
But the more you create the easier it will be for you to rank in the search engines.
The average web user won’t go past the first five listings on a search engine results page (SERP). According to a 2014 study from Advanced Web Rankings, more than 67% of all clicks on SERPs go to the top five listings. Things start to get grim when you look past those first few results. Research shows that websites on the first search engine results page receive almost 95% of web traffic, leaving only 5% for the remaining search results pages. (Source: Leverage Marketing)
If you want to sell original art online you will have to find a way to have your artwork seen. This can be accomplished by ranking high in search results, social media, and email marketing.
Creating art in series is one step you can take to start ranking higher in the search results due to the variety of keywords you will be using.
Livia is a great example of how creating art in series can help an artist build a successful online art business.
