Interview
Dave Nevue – Kirsten where are you from?
Kirsten Sneath – Hello Dave I am originally from England, but I now live in Oregon, USA. My husband and I moved here just over 10 years ago.
Dave Nevue – How long have you been creating art?
Kirsten Sneath – I have always loved drawing and painting. Art was my favorite subject at school. However, finding the time after leaving school was tricky. I only started painting again when my kids were both at school full-time, almost 3 years ago.
Dave Nevue – What inspired you to be an artist?
Kirsten Sneath – I never thought I would become an artist so it’s been amazing to find that I am one! I started out making cards for family and friends. I began painting on them and found I loved that part most. I have just been challenging myself ever since.
Dave Nevue – Who are some of your favorite artists?
Kirsten Sneath – I studied Art History at school and my favorite artists were the Impressionists, such as Renoir and Monet. I always loved the light in their paintings. I admire many current artists too. I follow so many amazing artists on Twitter and am in awe most of the time!
Dave Nevue – Could you tell me about your artistic style and how it evolved?
Kirsten Sneath – I suppose my style is realism with a hint of impressionism. I like to let loose with a paintbrush and paint what I like, or my kids like, usually cute animals or colorful flowers. I try to use my own photographs where possible. I am always clicking away with my camera for inspiration.
I have painted many dog portraits since painting my dog, Tinker. I love receiving commissions to paint a beloved pet, it feels such an honor and I love to see the client’s reaction. I used to paint on big canvases but now I tend to keep them small. I like to be able to hold a canvas in my hand while I paint.
Dave Nevue – What are your favorite mediums to work with?
Kirsten Sneath – I mostly work in acrylic. I just recently started painting with watercolors too. I also like to sketch in graphite and color pencil. It’s good to try new things and to keep practicing. When I began painting again I think had forgotten what I was capable of.
Dave Nevue – How do you find inspiration?
Kirsten Sneath – Nature is my main inspiration. I have developed an interest in photography over this last year, mostly macro of flowers. I have painted several using my own photographs. I love flowers and my garden is great inspiration! I also take advice/commissions from my two children. We are big animal lovers in this house so I’d say most of the time I am painting animals.
Dave Nevue – What message would you like to get across with your art?
Kirsten Sneath – My art makes me happy. It is bright and colorful. I hope that others are happy when they see it and it brings a smile.
Dave Nevue – Do you sell your art?
Kirsten Sneath – I do sell my art. I have had some success at some local shows. I shall be taking part again this year. I have not currently got a website or any way of selling online. I’m sure that will happen in the future. I do have my images on several sites where they can be bought as prints and many other items. This has been a lovely way to get my art out in the world.
Dave Nevue – Where can people purchase your art?
Kirsten Sneath – I can always be contacted directly through my Facebook page Art by Kirsten Sneath or via Twitter @kirstensneath1.
You can also contact me via pixels.com/profiles/Kirsten-sneath
or redbubble.com/people/kirstensneath1.
My images are also available on Zazzle and cafepress.com/profile/131533928.
Dave Nevue – How long have you been selling your art?
Kirsten Sneath – My first pet portrait commission was two and a half years ago. I have completed much more since then. I have sold of few of my own pieces at local shows over the last two years. I have much more to sell. My walls are full and I can’t stop painting!
Dave Nevue– I see that you do well with POD services, how easy are they to work with and what is your favorite?
Kirsten Sneath – I started out on just Fine Art America/Pixels and had almost all my artwork on it, however, I have had next to no sales on there. I am a tiny fish in an ocean of artists who seemed to spend an enormous amount of time on the site. I have no interest in using all my time on a computer, I’d much rather be painting! I only have my favorites on there now. My most successful site is Zazzle. I found it overwhelming at first because of all the products available. It is easy to upload artwork and once you get to know the site and see your most popular designs you can create more variety of products. I like that all the items can be personalized or customized by the buyer if they so wish. Cafepress has been a good site for sales too, especially my Playful River Otter painting. The sales are so random and have ranged from stickers to shower curtains. Makes my day however big or small. Love that someone has chosen my artwork!
Dave Nevue – Where can people learn more about you and your artwork?
Kirsten Sneath – I have a Facebook page set up, on which I share works in progress, completed paintings and offers on the various print-on-demand sites I am currently on. I hope to get a website set up at some point in the future.
Dave Nevue – Where can people follow you on social media?
Kirsten Sneath – My Facebook page is Art by Kirsten Sneath. My Twitter account is @kirstensneath1. I have found these to be a great place to share my work. I am part of a lovely community where artists and art lovers share and appreciate each other’s work.
Dave Nevue – Do you enjoy the business side of being an artist?
Kirsten Sneath – I am such a novice at the business side. I am not the most outgoing or confident person, but I am improving. I am sure I will get better as time goes on. You have offered some sound advice in your eBook Dave!
Dave Nevue – Thank you!
Dave Nevue – What advice could you share with young artists trying to enhance their craft?
Kirsten Sneath – I would say if you love being creative, make time for it. I wouldn’t be without it now. I find it very therapeutic. Try different styles, subjects, and mediums. Keep practicing and sketching.
Dave Nevue – What advice could you share with artists just learning how to sell their art either online or offline?
Kirsten Sneath– Just put your art out there for people to see. I am only just starting out so it’s hard for me to give advice on selling art. While waiting for the art shows to start, I have my artwork available as prints, t-shirts, and many other random items. Some of my images are very popular. The fact that somebody picked my painting or photograph on something for their home or as a gift makes my day.
Thank you so much for joining me today Kirsten. I look forward to seeing more of your work soon.
