Developing a Plan for your Art Blog

Everything that you post will be a reflection of your art business. Having a plan for your blog will help you build your business instead of jeopardizing your business.

At this point, I have used the word “Business” three times. You might be pulling your hair out by now. You might be thinking “I am an artist, not a businessperson.” If you would like to make an income with your art, you need to understand that you will be running a business.

If you do not think you can run a business, I am here to tell you that you can. The first step is to have the right frame of mind. Bbelieve in yourself. I am not going to say it will be easy. There will be a lot of work ahead of you as well as learning. Always keep in the back of your mind, everything you do today will bring you one step closer to your dreams tomorrow.

In this post, I am going to share with you tips on how to start your art blog.

An art blog, in my opinion, is a very powerful tool for the artist.



Before you start to write any content for your blog you want to decide what categories your blog will have. This is the first step in developing a plan for your art blog.

Categories are like files. They will store articles that are relevant to the category name. This will make it easier for your reader to navigate through your site and find the information that they are searching for.

The content name should be a vague name. You can add subcategories that are more specific.

An example would be, the category name “How to Draw” sub-categories could be “Drawing Supplies” “Drawing Tutorials” “Drawing videos” Drawing Resources” etc.

You have the main category then you have separate “folders” (sub-categories) that are more specific. By setting your blog up this way you make it a more enjoyable experience for your reader.

Sit and write how you want your categories to be displayed on your blog. Being proactive will save you a lot of time in the future.


Write Articles

By now you have your Vision StatementMission Statement, template design and your categories all planned out. The next step in developing a plan for your art blog is to write valuable content that will be entertaining or educational for your readers.

A good way to start is to write about ten articles. Do not post them yet. Have an article or two for every category and subcategory.  This will be helpful for a couple of reasons.

The first advantage is that you will get used to writing. At first, you might find it challenging to write content. Once you do it a few times you will start to find your voice. A valuable tip is to be you. Write as if you were talking to your spouse or friend.

The second important benefit is you will have an accurate time frame of how long it will take to write an article. When you have a blog it is important to post at consistent times. If you find that it takes a week to write an article, then that is what you will promise your readers. They will look forward to your weekly post.

If you are not consistent on your postings you will find that people will start to forget about you. Your goal is to gain a following not to lose a following.


New articles

Now that you have a good amount of content built up it is time to start publishing your work. Start posting your content. Do not post it all at once. If you have noticed that you can only create content for one blog a week, you will want to start posting one post a week. You will have a good amount of content waiting to be posted. This will give you a good amount of time to research what you will be writing next. This will prevent you from rushing and posting something that is not perfect.

Start to create a list of ideas that you would like to write about. Having a list will create a spark for when it is time to sit down and start writing. Remember your time is valuable. You do not want to waste hours staring at a blank screen.

You can now start to see why developing a plan for your art blog is important.


Find an Editor

I can not tell you how many times that I have posted something and was embarrassed when the mistakes that I made were brought to my attention. I have learned (unfortunately it took me a long time to learn) that it is in my best interest to wait to post an article until it was proofread.

Just by having someone who you trust to read your article, you could be fixing simple errors that were overlooked when you were writing. I am very fortunate that my wife is an excellent editor. She has a way to make sentences flow like art. I am grateful that she is supportive and willing to help me.

  1. Create a Vision Statement
  2. Create a Mission Statement
  3. Find a Template for your brand
  4. Create Categories and subcategories
  5. Write 10 Articles
  6. Set a posting schedule
  7. Find new material to write
  8. Find an editor
