Color Psychology For The Visual Artist
Color psychology is the study of hues as a determinant of behavior, and it depicts how colors affect us. Artists use color psychology to drive their choice of hues, and whether they want to elicit a strong emotion, feeling of melancholy, intense passion, and so on. Cool colors, warm colors, and neutral colors each have a different psychological effect. Further, different shades and hues within each color can mean something different and bring about a specific emotion.
For example, blue holds a diverse array of meanings depending on culture, transparency, and context. It is generally considered a calming, serene color because it is associated with natural elements like water or sky. However, it can also evoke feelings of sadness or aloofness as seen in the works of Pablo Picasso, specifically those that he painted during his “blue period.” This period, which lasted from 1901 to 1904, showcased the artist’s own state of melancholy through monochromatic shades of blues and blue-greens.
To find out how you, as an artist, can evoke the desired emotion you’re trying to convey through your work, consult the below infographic created by Invaluable. It highlights each specific color, an example from a reputable painter, and the way you can make your work more powerful.
