An artist blog is a powerful tool that will build brand awareness, generate online traffic to your art listings and build a loyal following.
Wikipedia defines an art blog as:
“An art blog is a common type of blog that comments on art. More recently, as with other types of blogs, some art blogs have taken on ‘web 2.0’ social networking features. Art blogs that adopt this sort of change can develop to become a source of information on art events (listings and maps), a way to share information and images, or virtual meeting ground.
Art blogs entries cover different topics, from art critiques and commentary to insider art world gossip, auction results, art news, personal essays, portfolios, interviews, artists’ journals, art marketing advice and artist biographies.
Art blogs may also serve as a forum to reach out to anybody interested in art.”
Platforms For Fine Art Blogs
Before we get started on the artist blog checklist, I would like to talk a little about blogging platforms.
There are two options you have. You can start a blog on a hosted platform or self-hosted platform.
A hosted blog is a free platform with limited features.
The features are similar to Facebook. You can add text, images, and videos to a post.
It will be more difficult to brand your blog using a hosted platform due to the limited theme options that are offered.
A self-hosted platform is a platform you own and have total control of the sites look and feel.
The WordPress software is free but you will have to invest in a domain name and hosting service.
Many artists use WordPress as their blogging software because of all the features and benefits it offers.
BlueHost (affiliate link) is a service used by countless bloggers that offer domain names and hosting at a very reasonable price. After you have purchased your domain name and hosting, follow their easy instructions for starting a WordPress site. If you run into any problems you can contact their 24/7 customer service.

Content Drives Traffic
Creating exceptionally good content will give you an upper edge over your competition.
Reliable content will show your expertise in your field.
The most important criteria for creating blog posts that sell art is being consistent. You want to be consistent with your posting schedule, the flow, and verbiage of your posts.
Providing content that interests your audience, provides value, educates, inspires and creates emotion will build a loyal following that will continue to grow.
“The content you present to your readers can be the most powerful tool you have to build relationships with your current and potential customers. While the overall appearance and “feel” of a website is important, the content you include is crucial. There are two ways that your content affects your web presence – the ranking of your site in search engines and the ability for users to find you.” – According to Lindsey Smith

Besides, the layout of your blog here are some other important areas you should review before you publish your post.
- Do you have a keyword-rich title?
Keywords are how your target audience will find your posts. A person will type a query into the search engine bar and articles relating to the words they use will appear. The most important place to add keywords is in the title.
- Does your content support your title?
The easiest way for you to lose the audience you already have or have new visitors quickly leave your site is by not delivering what you promise. When you are writing a post, stick to the topic you are writing about. You can always create various posts on different subjects.
- Does your content have keywords that support your title?
Google and other search engines understand what a website or blog post is about by the keywords in the title and body of the post. A basic SEO strategy you will always want to implement is including keywords throughout the body of your post.
- Did you include an image?
Images are important to a blog post. It has been shown that blog posts will receive more share with images than without images.
“Blog articles with images get 94% more views.” – According to Jeff Bullas

Take a few extra minutes to find a perfect image your content.
- Did you do a spellcheck?
Before you hit publish, read your post out loud one more time.
Take five minutes before you hit publish to see if there are any spelling or grammar mistakes you have missed.
Simple grammar mistakes could easily lose your credibility.
- Did you check to see if the facts in your content are correct?
The value of your content is only as good as the facts you are providing.
If you want your readers to revisit your site, provide them with accurate, valuable content.
Conclusion:
Credibility comes with consistency. Your artist blog is a reflection of you and your art business. You only want to provide the best content for your audience.
This blog checklist will prevent you from overlooking something important.
If you do not have the time to finish the blog checklist, do not post your article. Wait until you have completed the checklist.
