I have been selling my art online for over 15 years and I have to be honest, it was a challenging ride. The only thing that kept me going was my will to succeed.
It was difficult to find any information about selling art or any products for that matter when I started. eBay was the most popular selling platform and there was not a lot of information about online marketing.
Most of my learning came from mistakes I made and I made plenty of them. At the time I knew nothing about keywords, writing art descriptions or even how to upload images.
But I was willing to do whatever it took to learn how to sell my artwork online.
After 2 years my sales on eBay increased so much that I decided to have a website built for my business.
The site cost me over $4,000 and I could not change the look or layout of the site unless I wanted to pay extra.
Fast forwarding to today, you can easily build a website with WordPress for a fraction of the cost and you can edit your site as your business grows.
Multiple platforms are also available for artists selling art who do not want to own a website.

There have been so many changes over the past 15 years and tools that are now available make it possible for all artists to succeed.
The question is – what do you do after you have your artwork listed on your artist website or Etsy?
Before I start talking about marketing your art I want to mention that there is no simple solution.
Just because you have your art listed online does not mean it will sell.
You will have to put in the hard work and market the products and services you are selling.
Patience is also an important key factor in operating an art business.
There is no such thing as an overnight success story.
All of the artists you see doing well have been working hard on their marketing strategies.
These artists have spent many hours building their brand, marketing on social media, blogging about their artwork, sending emails and the list goes on.
They have tried various marketing strategies over the years and spent time learning who their target audience is.
How To Market Your Art
Before you can write a marketing plan you have to know what your objectives are.
- How much money would you like to earn every month?
- Where do you want to sell your art?
- Are you going to sell prints of your original art?
A marketing plan without objectives is a waste of time.

Your goal is to have a viewer know that it is your art they are looking at even if they have never seen it before.
To achieve this is harder than you might think and takes years of hard work. The time you invest in improving your artistic skills will pay off in the long run and make it easier for you to market your brand to build an online presence.

Devote time every week to learn about marketing.
The best way to learn is by studying one thing at a time.
The list I provided about online marketing is overwhelming and there is too much information to try to digest in one sitting.
Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, work on one area at a time.
For example, let’s say that you want to learn how to grow your email list, research and learn everything you can about building an email list.
Ask your network and fellow artists for help.
Once you start to see your email list grow, focus on learning a different strategy like blogging or how to sell on Facebook.
I will be the first one to tell you that you will learn more working on one thing at a time rather than spreading yourself too thin on multiple tasks.
You Are The Boss
The last thing I would like to talk about today is the importance of staying focused and motivated.
When you have decided to sell your artwork you have decided to start a business. You are the CEO of your art business.
Everything you do and every decision you make that relates to your artwork will affect the growth of your business.
Planning, strategizing, analyzing and staying productive will be all on you.
You are in total control of your business.
You have all the tools you need to build a successful art business.
All you have to do is stay focused and keep working towards your end game.
Marketing artwork starts with goals and developing strategic strategies that will help you to achieve your goals.
There is a lot to learn about online marketing, don’t be afraid to ask for help and dedicate time every week to enhance your artistic and marketing skills.
