5 Types Of Art Blog Posts That Drive Traffic

Many artist’s blogs fail because they give up to soon or they do not learn how to optimize their blog for search engines (SEO).

I have started several blogs in the past and even though they were not successful, I learned a great deal about digital marketing.

I took everything I have learned from the previous attempts and applied the new strategies to this site, NFAM (Nevue Fine Art Marketing).

Generating blog traffic was a challenge at first but in less than two years NFAM was receiving over 50,000 unique page views each month and it is projected to reach over 100,000 monthly page views within the next six months. (UPDATE – NFAM now receives over 100,000 unique page views every month.)

Achieving this was not easy and it took a lot of work.

I spent many hours learning and trying new blogging ideas. In fact, I am still learning how to increase blog traffic for free and trying new strategies to continue to grow my audience.

I am sharing with you my story because I want you to know that you can have the same success as long as you are willing to put in the work and learn from the strategies that are not producing positive results.

What Artist Blogs Need

There are many layers that make up a successful art blog.

However, there are only three areas you will need to focus on to build a strong foundation for your blog.

You will see great results from advanced art marketing strategies after you have the basics outlined below in place.

Art Blog Basics:

  • Strong Secure Platform
  • Pillar Content
  • Promotional Strategy

It does not matter if you own fine art blogs, painting blogs, acrylic painting blogs or even an art history blog, you need to build a strong foundation before you can benefit from other strategies.

WordPress Art Blog

WordPress is a powerful, secure platform used by many online business owners.

Artists who use WordPress are building a business on land they own and have the flexibility to brand their business as they envision.

If you are planning on having an online business you will want to consider using WordPress for your website platform.

It is easy to install with BlueHost’s one-click WordPress Installer and its thousands of themes available that will allow you to brand your art business exactly the way you envision.

After you have your WordPress blog live you will want to decide on a theme for your site.

There are free WordPress themes for artists available but I use and recommend StudioPress Themes for WordPress Themes.

In my opinion, StudioPress builds the most flexible and secure themes available for WordPress.

Pillar Content

After you have decided on what blogging platform you will be using you will want to focus on writing pillar content (A content pillar is a substantive and informative piece of content on a specific topic or theme that can be broken into many derivative sections, pieces, and materials. Source Kapost Blog).

Writing blog posts is a lot of work but in time you will be rewarded with a lot of people visiting your site and enjoying your artwork.

Always keep in the back of your mind that every post you publish is another opportunity for you to grow your audience.

Promoting Strategy

Before I talk about the different types of art blog posts that will help you to attract your target audience I would like to mention that you will have to promote your posts so you can reach a larger group of people.

You will be wasting your valuable time writing new posts that nobody will read if people do not know your new posts exist.

The blog posts you write will rank in Google’s search over time but while you are waiting for them to rank, start sharing them on all of your social media accounts and email list.

Types Of Art Blog Posts That Drive Traffic

Now that you know how to build a strong foundation for your art blog and you are going to start promoting your new blog posts, let’s talk about the different types of blog posts that tend to attract people.

Below are 5 types of art blog posts that drive traffic.

List Posts

List posts are very popular on social media networks and produce a lot of shares and engagement.

Lists posts provide value for people who do not have much time but are looking for a solution to a problem they might have.

An example of a list post that has performed well for me is 15 Places to Sell Art Online and Make Money

How-To Posts

How to posts perform the best on NFAM because they are solving a problem a reader has.

“How to” posts tend to be more detailed and have step-by-step directions to solve or fix a problem.

Examples of “How to” posts that might work well for your audience:

  • How to Hang a Painting
  • How to Clean a Painting
  • How to Frame a Painting
  • How to Care for a Painting
  • How to Ship a Painting for a Gift
  • How to Purchase the Perfect Painting for a Gift

Here are a few of NFAM’s most popular “How to” posts:

Tools Posts

Everyone enjoys learning about new tools, apps or gadgets that will make their days a little easier.

Sharing your favorite tools with your audience might produce great results for you.

Examples of Tools Posts:

  • Best Oil paints for Visual Artists
  • Best How to Paint Books
  • Best How to Draw Books
  • Best App for Tracking Art Sales

Here are a couple of tool posts that has produced great results for NFAM:

How to Install Social Warfare on WordPress Art Blogs

How to Hide Pinterest Images in Blog Posts with Social Warfare

Blog Series

Many artists struggle when it comes to thinking of different topics to write about.

The bottom line is that your art blog will be put on the back-burner if you have nothing to write about.

The end result will be less traffic which leads to low art sales.

An easy way to keep a regular blogging schedule is by writing a series post about a particular topic.

Art in progress posts tends to perform very well for artists.

You can easily post several times a week with art updates and it will make it easier for you to keep a blogging schedule that will generate traffic to your art blog.

Keep in mind that you will want to intertwine “art in progress” posts with other types of posts.

Here are a couple of series posts that I have published in the past:

Art Blog Series – How To Grow Your Online Art Business

Pinterest Marketing Series For Crafters And Artists

How To Sell Paintings With Tailwind Series

Art Technique Posts

I have seen so many artists build a large following simply by teaching their unique art techniques.

These types of blog posts will help you to reach a different audience and help you to build brand awareness.

Providing art technique posts will also help you to land more sales because art buyers will see you as an expert in your field.

28 Day Blogging Challenge

Would you like to have an easy to follow blogging plan that will help you to generate over 50,000 (UPDATE over 100,00) unique page views a month?

If you would like to spend more time in your art studio and less time trying different digital marketing strategies that fall short you will want to consider taking the 28 Day Blogging Challenge for Visual Artists.

Conclusion:

It will take some time for your art blog posts to generate traffic from ranking in Google’s search.

While you are waiting for your art blog to rank in Google’s search you can speed up the growth of your blog by writing post types that are proven to perform well for other artists.
