Can you remember a time when there were no social media sites?
What is the first platform that pops in your mind when someone mentions social media?
If I were to guess, I would say your answer is Facebook.
With over 1 billion active users’ worldwide, it is safe to say that Facebook is a household name.
Facebook has been through many changes over the years. Just a few years ago Facebook was the best social media platform for small businesses.
You could build a free Business page that your fans could follow. Anytime you wanted to share something new about your art business all you would have to do is post it on your Business Page and your content would reach most of your fans.
Many artists did very well on Facebook and made a lot of money. In the beginning, most of my commissions came from Facebook. Then it happened. Facebook changed its algorithm.
Instantly artists could not reach most of their followers. Artists who only relied on Facebook for their business suffered greatly. This is one example of why you should never put all of your eggs in one basket.
It is also a good example of why you should not build a business on rented land. You want to build your business on something you own like a blog and an online art gallery.
Social media platforms are a great tool for artists but should not be the only tool used. You should also focus on sites that are showing results.
I am not saying what platforms will work best for your niche. But I do recommend spending your time on platforms that produce results.

Instagram is now just over seven years old and it is building momentum.
I remember when Instagram first came out.
It was intrigued by this app, but I found no value to use it for my business.
Today, businesses are utilizing this app to build a large following and reach a new audience.

Instagram has over 500 million active monthly users.
Instagram users have shared over 40 billion photos to date.

Instagram users “like” 4.2 billion posts per day.

Can you imagine being able to reach 500 million people a month?
Being able to reach that amount of people is unrealistic, but even the smallest percentage will greatly benefit your art business.
If you are trying to reach people overseas, Instagram might be the tool you were looking for. With 80% of the users coming from outside the U.S. you are sure to attract an international crowd.

You might start to build a large following who react and engage well with your postings.
You might learn the best hashtags to build your follower count.
Even if you build a large following on Instagram, is it the best platform to spend most of your time on?
You want to increase your ROI (Return on Investment) with the content you are creating. Your time is valuable. You do not want to waste your time on a platform that will not increase your ROI.
Marketing on Instagram is different from most social media platforms out there.
You cannot engage with your audience to learn more about them.
You cannot provide links to individual posts.
Instagram does not offer analytics like most social media platforms.
How can you tell if your Instagram marketing is working or not?

Like I mentioned earlier, Instagram does not offer any analytics to track the performance of your posts.
This makes it difficult to know what is working and what is not working.
For you to maximize your efforts you need to understand what your target audience is looking for.
Maybe in the future, Instagram will offer analytics but for now, these are the two best options I have found.
Dash Hudson is relatively new and provides the most detailed metrics around for Instagram.
Some of the features include:
- Get insight into account growth
- Get insight into post performance
- Get insight into interactions with followers
- Reports sent to your inbox weekly and monthly
- And much more.
Iconsquare is popular with most markers when looking to track their Instagram metrics.
Iconosquare allows you to track what is important like, the best time to post, a number of likes a post receives, and the number of shares a post receives.
You can even track how people found you and what type of followers they are.

- The size.
- The audience your work attracts.
- And so on.
What I tell everyone is to research first. If it seems like it will be a good plan, implement it. Assess the progress then decide if it is beneficial for your business.
If you see momentum, you might want to fine tune the plan to see if you can make it work better for you.
So, to answer the question, is Instagram right for you? The answer I would give is, try it and see if your target audience is also on Instagram.
The only way you will know if it is worth your time is by studying analytics. The two tools I went over will help you to determine if Instagram is a perfect fit for you.
Instagram is becoming the marketer’s go-to social media platform for building brand awareness.
I feel that no tool can provide results if you cannot track the performance.
