It is that time of year when you will see discounts everywhere. Whether you are visiting your local stores or online you are going to see flash sales everywhere.
There are different pricing strategies that you can use during the holiday season that will help you to boost sales but today I would like to talk about a different strategy that has worked well for me over the years. I would like to talk about how free shipping is super valuable to customers and in some instances more important than fast shipping.
Selling Your Art Online With Free Shipping
Can you use free shipping discounts to increase your art sales and still make a decent profit?
Before we begin, you will want to know how much profit you would like to earn this holiday season.
Instead of thinking about how many pieces of art you would like to sell think about how much money you would like to make.
Document how much gross profit (gross profit is the amount of profit you will make minus the cost of making and selling your art) you would like to earn over the holidays.
For example, if you are pricing your art for $100.00 and it costs $35.00 to create the art and you spend $15.00 for advertisements your gross profit will be $50.00. That $50.00 goes into your pocket.
3 Free Shipping Strategies
I am going to give you three different pricing strategies you will want to consider using for your free shipping promotion.
First, you can keep the same pricing you use for your artwork and heavily promote free shipping for the holidays.
Keep in mind that if you keep your art at the same price and offer free shipping you will be will lowering your gross profit margin.
How to calculate gross profit with free shipping:
Selling price – cost to make – the cost of advertising – shipping cost = gross profit.
Selling price $100.00 – cost to make the artwork $35.00 – the cost of advertising $15.00 – the cost of shipping $15.00 = gross profit $35.00
Now let’s talk about your gross profit goal.
To keep things simple let’s say that you wanted to earn $100.00 gross profit during the holiday season. (I hope you make a lot more than that.)
If you sold two pieces of art without offering free shipping you would have to sell two paintings.
If you offered free shipping you would have to sell three paintings to earn $105.00.
The second option is to increase your art prices by 10%-20%.
By increasing your art prices you will be lowering the loss you will take from offering free shipping.
For example, if you normally charge $100.00 and added 10% to the price the new price will be $110.00.
If you offer free shipping and the shipping cost is $15.00 you will now only be losing $5.00 from your gross profit instead of $15.00.
I have used this strategy in the past and it has worked very well for me.
I have also used this strategy to increase my prices for the following year.
So for example, if I charged $100.00 last year for my artwork and increased the price by 10% to offer free shipping for the holiday when the holiday free shipping special expires I will keep the selling price at $110.00 for the following year.
The last option I would like to talk about is to offer free shipping if they spend a specific amount on an order or if they purchase a specific item.
For example, FREE SHIPPING on orders over $250.00 or receive FREE SHIPPING when purchasing regular priced items.
These are just a few examples you can use.
Experiment with different strategies to see what works best for your audience. Just make sure that you keep an accurate record of what you are doing and the results that occurred from the strategy you put into action. This information will help you to make better decisions for next years holiday season.

One way you can grow your email list is by promoting a FREE SHIPPING CODE for anyone who joins your email list.
This is a great tactic to build your email list fast.

The holiday season is coming up quickly. Take advantage of this time of year and create different strategies that will help you to sell more art.
Offering free shipping is one strategy that has helped me to increase my sales over the holiday season.
The strategies I have talked about will also work throughout the year. You do not only have to implement them during the holiday season.
If there is a time when your sales are slow, offer free shipping for a limited time to try to boost your sales.
